Into the Beyond

Matthew Castillo is a graduating senior at Pembroke Pines Charter High School. His works are often based on questions that pop into his head, such as “What does that feeling look like when you’re looking up at the sky at 1 am, and forget that you’re even there?” Although previous pieces were created using dry media and incorporated lots of surrealism, he has more recently incorporated acrylic & watercolor paints and shifted toward realism.

the atala is designed, curated, & edited by the Pines Charter Chapter of the National English Honor Society. It showcases original student poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, literary criticism, and art. Like its namesake — the small, bright butterfly that grew from near extinction to rising numbers in our part of the world — this little literary journal aims to grow our love of writing and expand our community’s appreciation for the literary arts.
